"Soul Train" Legend Don Cornelius Dies at 75

via Essence.com

I was sad to hear that Don Cornelius passed away at the young age of 75. On the first day of Black History Month, Don Cornelius will be remembered as the host of the super popular music television show "Soul Train". Soul Train served as the first platform to expose our lifestyle and culture by showcasing our music to the world. Most of the legends (Aretha, Gladys, Marvin, Diana) in music appeared on Soul Train and this was where Black folk learned about all the latest fashion, hairstyles, dance moves and music that was fresh in the Black community.

The show gave the Black community a sense of "cool" that mainstream America has been fascinated with ever since the '70s. I, too, as a young kid was fascinated at the amount of fun that was taking place every Saturday morning while people were dancing and doing the infamous "Soul Train Line."Don Cornelius coined the phrase, "Love, Peace and Soul" which became the unofficial slogan of Black America from the '70s and was reflected of the spirit of our community at that time.

Don Cornelius will be missed as a legend that encouraged us all to live with "love, peace and soooooul!"

Black History Month 2012

via aframnews.com

Good Morning MochaBelles and welcome to Black History Month. It is hard to believe that it is already February, and that means it's time to reflect on African-American culture. Have you ever wondered how this month came into fruition....?

Welp, Carter G Woodson believed that the contributions of African Americans should be celebrated throughout all of civilization and created Negro History Week in 1925. The following year, Negro History Week was celebrated in February and the response from the community was overwhelming. Teachers, preachers and Black clubs were excited to discover how they could get information to spread awareness of African-American culture and .....VOILA....years later, we have Black History Month.

MochaBelle Look of the Day: Mel B

via Essence.com

There is nothing scary about Mel B's (Formerly known as Scary Spice) outfit. Spotted shopping at Chanel in West Hollywood, CA. In fact, this is one of my favorite color combos...navy blue and tan! I like her new 'do and the fact that she has a smokin' body after giving birth to her third child a few months ago!

MochaMoms these days are really setting the bar high for giving birth and getting back into great shape.....gone are the days where you can carry that baby weight for a few years!

MochaMale Mondays: Hakeem Nicks

via NorthJersey.com

I don't know what I like most about Hakeem...his smile or his country accent. Either way, this is a nice way to start off a cold Monday morning........with some hot chocolate. For those of you who aren't football lovin' MochaBelles and don't know who Hakeem is, he is a Wide Receiver for the NY Giants and a certified piece of dark chocolaty gooodness!

This weekend, the NY Giants and San Francisco 49ers will battle it out at Super Bowl 46! Not sure how football works? Stay tuned for an article explaining the game so you can engage in the conversation this Sunday!

Happy Monday my lovely Mochas! Spread this chocolate to your fellow MochaBelles....sharing is caring!

Elle Varner Debuts Mixtape "Conversational Lush"

Elle Varner debuted her mixtape, Conversational Lush, and is giving us a taste of what's to come when her album "Perfectly Imperfect" drops later on this year. For those that don't know, Elle is a quadruple threat! Yes, you read that right, she is a writer, producer, vocalist and instrumentalist and personally I have always been in love with her lyrical prowess since hearing her songs as a Freshman at NYU. Elle is truly talented and in college I have witnessed her break off from our hang out sessions and come back 10 minutes later with an amazing song. She is truly a gifted artist and I'm excited to see her rise to the top!

Hope you enjoy Conversational Lush as much as I do......

MochaBelle Look of the Day: Michelle Obama

via The Look from MSN.com

I am surprised that I couldn't find this image on any other Mocha websites?!? However, First Lady, Michelle Obama, was STUNNING last night in her cobalt blue dress. I have to say that I have seen this color on many MochaBelles this season and really have fallen in love with it! I actually am on the hunt for a pair of cobalt blue jeans or pants for Spring/Summer!

Love & Hip Hop Episode 10 Season Finale

Of all the reality shows, I actually like Love & Hip Hop for its real depiction of the lives of these women and the struggles they go through with the men they are dating. If you missed the episode, here is the full length clip for ya! I like the motherly connections in this episode; Chrissy connecting with Jimmie's mother and bonding while on vacation and Kimbella's mom telling her straight up that she needs a man that will commit to her not just continue to have babies and be stressed. Really, it's sad to see how these women invest in these men, have their kids, wait YEARS for them to "get it together" and hope that they will live happily ever after. Maybe chasing these celebrities isn't all that it's cracked up to be?!?

MochaBelle Look of the Day: Tiffany Hines

via Essence.com

...Insert new favorite phrase.... Yes, MA'AM to this outfit! I think it is the orange coat that gets me. Tiffany Hines seems so excited about something and looks warm surrounded by all the snow! I definitely am one of those MochaFolk that would go to a ski resort and stay indoors, sipping on hot chocolate......but once I become more athletic, I will give all those extreme sports a-go! Anywhosie, I love this outfit, you?

Winter Lip Balms: Jack Black Intense Lip Therapy and Smith's Rosebud Salve

As most of you know, I'm a huge product junkie! Recently, I started doing more research about product ingredients and want to find ones that are as organic (close to nature) as possible. While I haven't found lip balms that are completely free of beeswax, petroleum and other drying chemicals, I picked up some new products from Sephora and wanted to know if any of you MochaBelles are trying/have tried these as well.

Overall, my lips feel moisturized, but I would like something without petroleum or beeswax since I read that these strip the lips of natural oils making them more prone to dryness. If you know of some natural lip balms, let a sistah know ;-)

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm, is a lip balm for men that glides on smooth and is soothing to my lips. It has an SPF of 25, shea butter and avocado oil which are great for the skin! Who knew all of this was wrapped up in a men's lip balm?!?
Smith's Rosebud Minted Lip Balm
This is a "cult-beauty-product-classic" of many of my Product Junkie MochaBelles. I like this one rather than the original since it has peppermint oil, a darker pink hue and is thicker than the original salve. However, I'm not a fan of petroleum based lip products ;-(

President Obama's State of the Union Address Tonight, 9 PM

Tonight, President Obama will give his State of the Union speech which will address the health of the economy, policies that will need to be put in place and most likely launch his campaign to become president for the next four years. I have to admit that I have not been completely invested in the government, but most of the comments on blogs suggest that the nation is pretty divided with regard to the effectiveness of President Obama's administration. Either way, I want to hear what he has planned moving forward and am excited that he is utilizing technology (Google Hangout) so that you can ask a question in real time and get an answer!

Is the Photo that Eric Benet Tweeted of Baby Breastfeeding Inappropriate?

via Necole Bitchie.com

This is the first picture that Eric Benet tweeted of hs newborn daughter Lucia enjoying some breast milk and throwing up a peace sign, however, many have questioned whether this is an inappropriate picture. Personally, I'm not a fan of people whipping out their breasts to feed their kids. Why....because it's an awkward Catch 22....looking means something and not acknowledging it means something as well.

However, I think this would be a great campaign ad for Black mothers to do more breast feeding! Look how "PEACE"FUL lil' Lucia looks!!! Plus, too many Black mothers sacrifice the benefits that breastfeeding gives to their children for silly reasons like boobs sagging in the future.....HELLO?!, PLASTIC SURGERY....LOL...

But seriously, the health of your child should take priority over how you breasts look. What are your thoughts?

MochaBelle Look of the Day: Iman

Iman has the fountain of youth and impeccable fashion embedded somewhere in her DNA! My goodness, she is FIERCE every time I see her! All I can say is YES MA'AM to this outfit!! She is definitely a stylcon for women of ALL ages, don't you think?

Nate Parker, one of the cast members of the movie Red Tails, which EVERYONE should see looks cute is this ensemble. Not super flashy, but fitted in all the right places.

President Obama Sings Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" at Apollo Theater

After leaving my apartment on 125th and seeing a street lined with barricades, I realized that President Obama was coming to town! I wasn't able to attend either of the two fundraising events he hosted, one being at held at Spike Lee's house, since the events required $15,000 and $35,000 entry fee! However, I was impressed with his singing debut at Harlem's Apollo Theater!

Not only is he attractive, intelligent, and eloquent....he can SANG?!? Ahhhh Michelle, you got a good one!

George Lucas Pays for Red Tails Movie In Full Since Hollywood Doesn't Believe in Black Films

I still can't believe that George Lucas spent close to $100 million of his own money for the production of this movie. There is a serious issue in Hollywood if they think that producing a film documenting American and African-American history wouldn't be a lucrative box-office endeavor.

It is PARAMOUNT for everyone to see this film this weekend to let Hollywood know that these films MUST CONTINUE to be produced. Our children need to know the full history of America and our community needs to learn from our forefathers how to persevere and strive for the continued progress of the African-American community.

Gabrielle Union throws B-Day Party for Dwayne Wade in Miami Beach

....::cue Beyonce's "Party"::...We like to par-tay...ay...ay...We like to par-tay!.....

Gabrielle Union threw a birthday party in Miami Beach for her boo, Dwayne Wade's, 30th birthday party! Check out the pictures below to see who was in attendance and how grandiose the party was!

MochaBelle Look of the Day: Solange

Fashionistas everywhere are on the fence about this outfit! I personally think it is stylish and given that she was at a Dolce and Gabbanna party during Milan Fashion week, it's "appropo"!

Thoughts?

P.S. Did you know that Solange just signed a modeling deal with Next Model Management?!

Cuba Gooding, Jr. & Tuskegee Airmen at a Screening of the movie "Red Tails"

via Essence.com

The more I hear about "Red Tails" the more excited I get about seeing it this weekend! Cuba Gooding, Jr. and other cast members have really been pushing for folks to see this film! Not only is this important in African-American history, it is a critical part of American history. These men served their country in a time that was rife with racial tension and proved to be vital to the Air Force during World War II.

MochaFolk, show Hollywood that movies like this NEED to be made more often by taking everyone (Mom, Dad, Aunties, Uncles, Cousins, Co-workers, Boos, etc.) to the theaters THIS WEEKEND! This story should be shared with EVERYONE!!....

Is The Approved Card from Suze Orman Worth It?

After reading the blogsphere for consumer reactions to this card I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews. For starters, this card is not for everyone and seems to resemble the Rush Card that Russell Simmons created. However, The Approved Card from Suze Orman is a bold move to revolutionize the way credit works in America and puts people first, which is one of her founding financial principles. Suze hopes that this card will lead to shifting the credit paradigm and not punish people that don't have credit, but have responsible spending habits.

If you have been keeping abreast with her recent books and her new Money Class on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), then you are aware that the middle class is nonexistent. You are either wealthy or not, and Suze wants this card to help people get out of their financial ditches. This is the first prepaid debit card that will report consumer spending habits to TransUnion in an attempt to have debit card purchases included in credit repots and eventually included in the calculation of your credit scores.

I see her vision and like that she is trying to change the credit system. However, establishing credit requires the use of credit cards so this process of incorporating debit transactions into credit reports may take years to develop and I'm not sure how this will help those that need credit in the short term. Also, there is a monthly fee of $3, most likely to cover the cost of the free access to credit scores/reports. The card will serve as a great tool for people to re-learn how to manage money and to distance themselves from plastic money and spend only what they have.

What are your thoughts? Are you going to get a card??

How the Black Community made Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a Holiday

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, MochaBelles!

It is extremely easy to forget the struggles that the Civil Rights Leaders in the Black community withstood to bring about change within this country. Through the efforts of Black celebrities, Black musicians, Black radio, citizens calling their political representatives, we now have a day to celebrate a man that lived and died for the advancement of our people. Today, I wanted to show videos of people that were there when Martin Luther King, Jr. day became an official holiday so that the sense of accomplishment could be felt by us all!

Today, is a day of reflection of how the persistence of our people can change the world. What would the world look like if you persevered to do the things that God has created and called you to do? Could you alter the course of history permanently for the Black community and the world at large?

Share your thoughts on what this day means to you and ways you celebrate the holiday...for starters, let's sing the "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" song that all MochaFolk grew up singing.....!

Congrats to Octavia Spencer for winning Best Supporting Actress for her Role in "The Help". I was on the fence about seeing this film, but once I did, I really fell in love with the characters that Octavia and Viola Davis played.

EBONY Magazine Tumblr Celebrates Vintage African-American Culture

via EBONY Tumblr

After browsing through a few of my go to blogs, I found an article over at Brown Girl Gumbo that mentioned EBONY magazine has a Tumblr that showcases vintage EBONY magazine covers and advertisements that ran in the magazine from the 50's to the 80's!!!

I am so PUMPED because I had an idea to decorate my home with tons of vintage images of African-American women as a constant reminder on how much we have accomplished, how beautiful we are and how our prescence is paramount in mainstream media! This seems so timely, given that Black History Month is approaching!

Check out the new EBONY MAGAZINE TUMBLR and get some inspiration! I hope this helps catapult  the magazine back into the forefront of African American print media......!

MochaBelle Look of the Day: LaLa Anthony

I don't know about you, but this color scheme SPEAKS to me and says, "Hey MochaBelle, this color combo is sure to turn heads and make you the center of attention!" LaLa Anthony has been turning up the fashion dial since her return to NYC and WE LIKE! I can't get over this look, the colors and the necklace and the hair and make-up are fabulous!

Halle Berry Engaged to Oliver Martinez

You heard it first here that 2012 is "The Year of Put a Ring On It" and now Halle Berry has joined the club*! After several interviews where Halle has professed that she won't be getting married since she tried twice already, it's good to see she is allowing herself to fall in love again.

Looks like she will be tying the knot with Oliver Martinez, whom she has been dating since 2010. Apparently, Oliver popped the question to Halle and she accepted during the Christmas holidays and has been sporting a GORGEOUS ring!*

After being married twice before (David Justice and Eric Benet) maybe the third time will be the charm?

*For all of us who were excited about the "engagement" we have to keep waiting. She is not engaged and the ring was reportedly given as a gift!

Career:Gayle King New Anchor on CBS Morning News, Oprah Tweets Support for BFF

Professionally, it helps to have great mentors in your corner, it's even better if your friend and mentor is Oprah Winfrey. This week, my new favorite morning program launched a new segment, "CBS This Morning" and I was so excited to see Gayle King as one of the new anchors.

Some assumed there would be tension since Gayle would be canceling "The Gayle King Show" over at the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) to pursue her CBS gig full-time. However, according to an article I read over at Huffingtonpost, Oprah is very supportive of her decision! She even tweeted her support for Gayle:

As MochaBelles, we have to support each other's career progression even if it means she will leave our own company in pursuit of her own professional goals.

Jay-Z Writes New Song for Daughter Blue Ivy Carter

Hip Hop's Royal Couple (King Carter and Queen B) have welcomed their Heir to the Throne!!

How cute is it that Jay-Z has already created a song for his daughter, Blue Ivy Carter born on Saturday, January 7, 2012. According to the song, sounds like him and Queen B may have had issues trying to conceive but what a blessing it is to finally have a "Destiny Fulfilled". I have always respected Jay for his honesty in his music and think it is amazing that he has already penned a song for his baby girl. How cute is that....she already made her first song with her parents before she could even speak! Man oh Man I can't wait for those first few pictures of them all together.

Congratulations to Beyonce, Jay-Z and baby girl Blue Ivy Carter!

New Movie "Red Tails" Depicts Tuskegee Airmen

Mark your calendars MochaBelles to see Red Tails on January 20, 2012!!! A film that depicts one of the greatest groups of African-American men this nation has ever known! No, I'm not talking about athletes, but the Tuskegee Airmen. If you are like me, you have grown up hearing stories about them, maybe even read a book about it, but to have a film on the big screen that George Lucas is producing is EPIC!

Directed by MochaMale Anthony Hemingway and including a line up of some sexy MochaMen (Nate Parker, Terrence Howard, Tristan Wilds, Method Man, Ne-Yo, Michael B. Jordan....) I definitely will round up my MochaBelles and head to the theaters....Hope you will too!

TV: Jim Jones Proposes to Chrissy on Love & Hip Hop

I am now officially calling 2012 "The Year of Put a Ring on It". First it was Lebron James and Savannah Brinson, now Chrissy finally got a ring from Jimmy. The proposal was definitely characteristic of their relationship--Chrissy nagging Jim and Jim tuning her out and doing what he wants to do anyway, but it was cute....

Check out the video below of Jim crashing Chrissy's Girls Getaway in Miami and the unique proposal....

MochaMale Look of the Day:Lil' Wayne

I saw these pics over at NecoleBitchie.com and FashionBombDaily.com and wonder what your thoughts are about this look? Animal print has been causing much debate in the urban fashion world and I wonder if you are feeling Lil' Wayne's outfit or not......Discuss.
